Mechanical Engineering Internship

Timeline: June 2022- August 2022

Location: Dublin, CA

I interned at Carl Zeiss Meditec, a medical devices company specializing in ophthalmic diagnostic equipment as a mechanical engineering intern in the R&D Hardware team. My responsibilities were focused around improving the mechanical design of the Clarus 700 Fundus Imager (pictured below) that resulted in the following outcomes:

• ​​Identified the root cause of a design failure responsible for the plastic deformation of a component in the Clarus under shipping loads of 25G through verification testing using a fabricated-in-house test fixture. 

• Increased the structural integrity of the Clarus to withstand shipping loads through changes in the mechanical design of 5 machined and die cast parts, which led to component safety margins increasing by up to 1333%  justified through Finite Element Analysis and stress calculations.

• Drafted 10+ engineering drawings with Solidworks using the ASME Y14.5-2009 GD&T standard to release design changes and communicate tolerances to manufacturers and fabrication labs.
